The
Breathers are back, with a new line up and new sound, making a
departure from their earlier work. "I'm Still
Curious," the new 12-song LP, produced and engineered by
the band is truly a headphone worthy labor of love. The sound
is at times lush and ethereal and at other times sharply
focused and heart pumping or stripped down and intimate. With
the release of their first record, Claire Hamilton - the voice
and songwriter of the band, was compared to Chrissie Hynde and
Neko Case. Gary Newcomb (Lil' Capn' Travis) played an
important role in the shaping of the new sound. His production
and instrumentation (pedal steel, guitar, Casio, melodica,
bass) gave certain songs ambience and depth and he cut the fat
off others to let them rock. Bill Doughty's understated yet
unconventional approach to the drums and quick open mind as an
engineer pulled everything together to make a cohesive
spacious sound. Landis Armstrong (Smallstars) a long time
collaborator with Hamilton, made weighty contributions to the
recording with his well known and loved, super classic guitar
sound. The band has created a live show that combines the
lush, sparse, and driving elements of the record. It would be
difficult to pin an era on style because it is best
described as timeless. |
